PRESS RELEASE
Lisbon Challenge wants to launch the next
tech giant
Lisbon, 24th of September 2014 – Twenty-three of the most promising technology
startups from all over the world are going to gather up in Lisbon for the Lisbon
Challenge Fall’14, starting from September the 29th
ambitious acceleration programs in Europe and it is promoted by Beta-I. During three
months, more than 200 mentors and investors will help developing the projects of
these startups, which have the goal to become the next technology giant.
The first day of the acceleration program will count with an Open Day that includes
the speech by the Secretary of State for tourism and Innovation, Adolfo Mesquita
Nunes, the live testimonial by the entrepreneurs Steffen Maier, co-founder of
Impraise, and Luís Batalha, co-founder of Orankl – They represent the first
Portuguese startups to join the greatest accelerator program in the world, the
YCombinator in Silicon Valley –, the intervention by the Lisbon’s City Council and the
participation by the companies and organizations that will mentorship the program,
as well as, the national bank, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and the IEFP. It will also
count with the presence of Airbnb’s European Country Manager – which will come
to Portugal for the first time just for the event – as well as Alex Czarnechi, Launch
Manager at Uber in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Índia.
All the startups present in the program are based on technologic innovations.
However, they combine very different concepts: from a app that allows you to control
the quality of the air; an online platform to create customized beauty creams; a
tourism app with augmented reality; to an app that tells people which mobile pricing
system they should be using in order to save more money. The entrepreneurs come
from 9 different countries: Portugal, Brazil, Ukraine, Belgium, Chile, Germany, Italy
and Spain.
. It is considered one of the most
During three months, in an amazing collaboration environment, the teams are going
to meet some of the most influential investors and entrepreneurs as well as learn
with the greatest specialists in the world in what concerns to entrepreneurship. The
mentors include managers from the major Venture Capital funds in Europe, like
IC2Capital, Connect Ventures, Point Nine Capital, ACCEL Partners, Index Ventures;
entrepreneurs like the co-founder of Seeds, Carlos Silva and the founder of Doodle,
Michael Näf; or specialists like Philipp Moehring, Director of AngelList Europe.
The president of Beta-I, Pedro Rocha Vieira, highlighted: “Until now the results of
the Lisbon Challenge have exceeded all our expectations. For these three editions,
we already received around 1300 applications from more than 56 countries. Our
alumni have gathered more than 25 million of euros in seed money, three of them
seeded by the SeedCamp and, for the first time, we had three Portuguese startups
joining the prestigious accelerator, YCombinator, in Silicon Valley (California –
USA). Adding to all of this, we have the enhancement of the national economy with
the creation of more than 400 job positions. For all of this, the Lisbon Challenge is
already recognized internationally as one of the biggest – and greatest – accelerators
in Europe.”
The Lisbon Challenge helps startups to perceive much faster if their project got
a chance to achieve success or not. It is divided in three different phases: the
business, the product and the scale. In the first phase, the teams aim to validate
the project’s value proposition and ensure that the startup’s base is solid and can
prosper to the next phase. In the product’s phase, Beta-I and all the mentors work
with the startups in order to sharpen their products and services. In the last phase,
the main topic lands on how is it possible to scale the company and achieve the
desired internationalization. This last phase has a great focus on finding external
financing through investors.
The startups will have the chance to pitch their business to both national and
international investors in global cities (e.g. Lisbon, London, Boston, San Francisco,
Sao Paolo, Tel Aviv). They will also be rewarded with products and services that
totalize a value of 150.000EUR. Nonetheless, the 5 best-in-class startups will get
invested and will move further for 6 month phase of incubation, where each startup
will receive an investment of 40.000EUR and also 30 years of free office space,
given by Lisbon’s City Council. The best in class from this 2nd
Challenge will be able to receive additional 200.000EUR in investment from Caixa
Capital.
The Lisbon Challenge organized by Beta-I, counts with the support of the Lisbon’s
City Council, the high patronage of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of
Portugal, and the institutional support by the Portuguese Government and by the
European Commission. It is also sponsored by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, by the
Tourism of Portugal, by KIC InnoEnergy, IEFP, EDP, Microsoft, and others.
